Leeann I just finished your wonderful book. I was able to borrow it through my local library. Thank you for telling your story and helping me learn more ways to help my daughter with ASD. It truly is a book about hope and triumph!
Hi Leeann- I just finished your book! Have to report that it made me cry, but thankfully it also made me laugh at times. I'm from Malad, and know your folks (we're in 2nd ward)so it was even closer to home. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. It is truly inspiring. While I had concerns about my 4 year old son after his 15 month vaccinations, (stopped talking, started screaming)I was reassured by a pediatrician that he was fine, that he would catch up. When I brought up his developmental delays, I was told afterall, he was 5 weeks early just give it some time. Just before he turned 2, I called the Idaho Infant Toddler Program for help. A glitch somewhere, left us in the cracks, and I didn't hear back from them. Long story, but when he had his 2 year well child check up, I asked the doctor to please run a Creatine Kinase test. He didn't walk until 19 months, and fell more frequently than the average toddler, so I feared the worst. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy runs in my family. Two of my sisters are carriers, and each have lost a son from the disease. A week after Baylor's 2nd b-day, we were given the devastating news that he had Duchenne MD. Talk about MAD. After two days I got on the phone to Infant Toddler AGAIN, and left , lets just say, A- to the point, direct message-( to put myself in a better light :0 )that my son would lose all his ability to walk and move, but by **** he was going to have the ability to talk and communicate! That would be all he would have left! Needless to say, they called me right back. I am happy to report that Baylor talks much better today, after almost 3 years of speech therapy, but he still most of the time has no reasoning skills, tantrums still,(although 75% less time than even a year ago. His OT told me she doesn't think he is on the autism spectrum, but his ST has told me she on somedays thinks he could have Aspergers. Anyway, I wrote to much, sorry! Just know, that your story gives me hope, that maybe we can find help for our son, so that his words and thoughts will give him the strength his muscles can't. I finally dedicated some time to read your book this weekend--I loved it and I love you. I wish I had known you during that time to give you support and encouragement-and that part in your book about that guy turnig around and giving you the look in church just made my blook boil-- I'm proud of you for becoming who you are today.
Thank you for sending me the link to your book my grandma actually surprised me and purchased a copy for me as a gift. Your book was wonderful and very inspiring thank you! Your book has been very helpful to me as far a seeking treatment for my little girl.
Read it over spring break and would love another copy to give away. I have a similar story to yours w/o the miraculous outcome. The guilt is enormous as my own neglect and lack of follow-through are to blame. But I got many ideas and am still inspired that my son can improve. He is 13 and diagnosed w/ a non-verbal learning disorder. So the question is...which direction do we go?? God Bless you and "Give 'em Hell" in that legislature.
